School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Surrey, stays fresh thanks to intelligent algorithms
This prestigious 6,600m² naturally ventilated building using WindowMaster NV Advance®, comprises four levels centered around a spacious stairwell atrium space. It is built by The University of Surrey to house a state-of-the-art Veterinary school, one of only eight in the UK. The School of Veterinary Medicine is designed by Devereux Architecture.

Devereux ArchitectureNatural ventilation is established in teaching rooms, teaching pods, open plan office spaces, cellular offices, meeting rooms and in the large central atrium. Almost 2500 m2 split into 53 ventilation zones in total.
325 WindowMaster WMX 826 MotorLink® chain actuators provide automation of window facades.
The ventilation principle varies between single sided ventilation in rooms with a limited room dept, stack ventilation in deep rooms with connection to the atrium and single sided ventilation with assisting mechanical exhaust for deep rooms without connection to the atrium.
In the atrium you find façade openings placed highly at ground floor level and second floor level. Here you also find mechanical exhaust as supplement to natural outlet since it was not possible to place windows in the roof, but only in the facades.
Intelligent algorithms ensure a healthy indoor climate
In each ventilation zone, temperature and CO2 levels are measured. The system then controls the opening or closing of windows based on this data and outdoor conditions to ensure a comfortable and healthy indoor climate. The control of the windows further depends on the wind pressure around the building. Part of this information comes from an external weather station that is also connected to the NV Advance® system. The system's control algorithms are based on CFD calculations which are done for each specific NV Advance® project, ensuring that our client's achieve bespoke control solutions.
Precise control of window actuators
The WindowMaster actuators are controlled via Motorlink® technology which ensures precise control of all actuators throughout the building. This project also includes manual override switches throughout the building so occupants have the ability to open or close the windows on demand, allowing them to easily personalize their immediate environment. After 30 minutes, the system changes back to automatic control.
Intelligent control of windows: MotorLink®
MotorLink® is a communication technology that enables 2-way control and feedback between window actuators and the Building Management System via the MotorController. All WindowMaster control systems are MotorLink® capable with many of our actuators. Click below to learn more and see related products.
