Sustainability first

In accordance with the climate plan of the Eurométropole of Strasbourg, the new Exhibition Park was developed to be economical and ecological, integrating CleanTech wherever possible, including: rainwater collection capabilities, photovoltaic panels and natural ventilation. The park consists of two main buildings, facing the river in the Wacken area of the city. The buildings, named “Edge of the Forest”, are comprised of locally-sourced wooden vertical beams, to filter the sunlight and ensure structural support. The expanded and natural ventilated roof covering the space is composed of several slopes, which also brings in natural light and optimal ventilation. Having considered a number of options for the HVAC system, Kengo Kuma and Associates turned to WindowMaster to deliver its cutting-edge solutions, CompactSmoke™ WSC 10A and 20A smoke control panel for configuration of smoke extraction and natural ventilation.

Big visions require big solutions

In collaboration with its local French partner, distributor MGAir, WindowMaster demonstrated its teams’ ability to undertake large-scale, complex projects and implement innovative solutions. 178 louvres frames and 3 exterior flap openings were installed on the buildings’ louvered facades. 27 Direct Air Capture systems were also put in place, removing excess carbon dioxide and providing clean air throughout the building. The captured CO2 could then be converted into concentrated carbon and oxygen which can be sequestered or reused. By having motorised ventilation systems, the new Exhibition Park fulfils part of its sustainable goals to be energy efficient. The natural air flow not only helps cut down on energy costs, it also ensures maximum comfort for guests while aligning with Kuma’s vision to design a space that showcases its natural surroundings.

Safety without sacrificing style

Beyond sustainability and design, fire safety was paramount in the accomplishment of this project. Following building regulations, WindowMaster was commissioned to provide its smoke ventilation solutions to seamlessly automate the opening of the buildings’ facades and enable efficient smoke extraction in the event of a fire. Such solutions are critical in ensuring guests can evacuate safely and avoid the dangers of smoke inhalation. WindowMaster's innovative solutions have been fundamental in shaping the Strasbourg Exhibition Park into a groundbreaking model of sustainability and visitor-centric design. This collaboration has set a new standard for green building practices in the events industry, demonstrating the profound impact that innovative technology integration can have on the creation of sustainable and welcoming spaces.
