City of Glasgow College - an engaging and energizing building
Rated as BREEAM, “Excellent” and EPC “A” rated, the City of Glasgow College (Riverside Campus and City Campus) is one of the biggest college developments in Scotland. It has won dozens of awards since opening in 2015 and 2016, respectively. And it's no surprise. The college took a definitive commitment to the environment by embracing several sustainable design strategies such as automated natural ventilation and solar photovoltaic panels, among others.

The design which incorporates automated natural ventilation places indoor air quality, daylighting, and comfort in focus to engage and energize the students and staff. Indeed, the two campuses house many occupants with more than 40,000 students of 130 nationalities and 1,200 members of staff. To reduce heat loads and maintain air quality, the atrium acts as a natural stack to drive cross ventilation through the buildings. The buildings’ windows are automated with a total of 1,200 concealed actuators which are controlled by the BMS for well-timed air change. Night flushing is also in place, which supports the daytime natural ventilation strategy and cooling during hot summer months.
Window automation integrated to BMS
The window actuators, delivered by WindowMaster, come equipped with a communication technology called MotorLink®. This allows for less cabling and easy integration of window automation to the BMS as well as providing accurate position control and visualization and quiet motor operation. The window automation solution further uses sensors that collect data on internal CO2 levels, indoor and outdoor temperatures, and the weather to ensure that the indoor climate is comfortable and that the windows open when it makes sense.
Intelligent control of windows: MotorLink®
MotorLink® is a communication technology that enables 2-way control and feedback between window actuators and the Building Management System via the MotorController. All WindowMaster control systems are MotorLink® capable with many of our actuators. Click below to learn more and see related products.

The design of the College has garnered a long list of awards, including the RIBA National Award (2017), RIAS Award (2017), and the AJ100 Building of the Year (2017).
The College are placed in the “best in class” category for carbon emissions in the Universities and Colleges category when compared to others in the HEEPI Sustainable Laboratories benchmarking. Together with the other low carbon and energy generation measures that are applied, the IES SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Model) forecast a total carbon dioxide emission of 13.8 kg CO2/m2 per annum.
